The Spark that Started it All: My Entrepreneurial Journey

Setting the Stage

Every entrepreneur has that pivotal moment when a spark ignites, setting them on an unexpected journey. For me, a blend of curiosity, a desire to create something meaningful, and life’s unexpected challenges propelled me forward. In this series, I’ll share the key moments, lessons, and experiences that shaped my path into the world of entrepreneurship.

The Early Inspiration: A Glimpse into Entrepreneurship

My journey began with small steps that laid the groundwork for bigger dreams. In 2010, I went to Saudi Arabia to work as an IT executive with a multinational company. Alongside my primary job, I started selling gemstones to local jewelry makers. This small venture sparked my interest in business, especially in gem trading. However, after returning to Sri Lanka, I was at a crossroads. My attempt to continue the journey was derailed by some hasty decisions, and I joined HSBC for stability. Yet, life threw another curveball when I lost that job during the COVID-19 pandemic. That loss drove me to seriously consider entrepreneurship and start anew, beginning with cyber security consulting

Facing Setbacks and the Value of Aligned Visions

One of the initial challenges was finding a partner with a shared vision. While I started my cyber security consulting business, my business partner had a different approach, viewing it as more of a community service rather than a profit-driven venture. It was a valuable lesson—partners must share the same goals for a business to thrive. We eventually went our separate ways, but the experience taught me the importance of aligning with the people you work with.

Books that Shaped My Mindset

Throughout this time, I was a member of the British Council Library, where I discovered books that profoundly influenced my perspective on entrepreneurship. Richard Branson’s Losing My Virginity, Finding My Virginity, and The Virgin Way encouraged me to think boldly, break boundaries, and embrace risk. Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki transformed my view on wealth and financial independence, helping me realize that building a business could lead to long-term security. These books strengthened my resolve, encouraging me to take ownership of my career and set out to build something impactful.

Taking the First Step

With newfound inspiration, I took the leap and registered my first business, Inflixe Technologies, offering cyber security consulting and web design services. It was exhilarating to turn ideas into reality, but the excitement was tempered by the practical challenges of starting from scratch.

Entrepreneurship is the art of turning setbacks into steppingstones, fueled by resilience, passion, and the courage to keep going when success seems just out of reach.

Initial Challenges and How I Overcame Them

Lack of resources, limited knowledge, and a steep learning curve tested my perseverance. But instead of being discouraged, I embraced these obstacles as growth opportunities. Staying motivated and persistent and seeing each challenge as a stepping stone became my guiding principles. Every struggle made me stronger and more prepared for the road ahead.

Lessons Learned Along the Way

  1. Success Doesn’t Happen Overnight: Entrepreneurship requires patience, commitment, and sleepless nights.
  2. Stay Aligned with Your Partners: Ensure your business partners are on the same page. Shared goals and values are essential for a successful partnership.
  3. Never Stop Learning: Books, mentors, and industry insights are invaluable. Constant learning has been a critical element in my growth.
  4. Follow Your Passion: Focus on areas where your strengths and interests lie. Identifying this balance is essential to sustaining long-term motivation and energy.

The Journey Ahead

I may still need to be the successful entrepreneur I aspire to be, but I am steadily growing, learning, and moving forward. In 2020, I launched Aviory Gems, which marked my serious return to the gem industry that had first inspired me in 2010. Reflecting on this journey, I realize that every step, challenge, and small win has shaped who I am today.

This journey has been one of continuous growth, resilience, and self-discovery. I am more determined than ever to stay committed to my entrepreneurial dreams, and I hope my story encourages others to find their own spark, persist through challenges, and create a path they believe in.
